How much CBD oil do I take? Side Effects?

CBD doesn't come with instructions or dosage amounts.  We all have a unique biochemical individuality.  Diets and current health status also play a role.  As you can see we are not all the same and it would be challenging to say what is the right amount of CBD for one is the right amount for all.  Since there is no set dosage amount this may prevent people from wanting to try it or provide an uncertainty of where to start.  Starting out low and slow is the key to finding your "sweet spot".  Your "sweet spot" is referred to as the dosage amount of CBD oil that you have found works best for YOU. If you were to ask a group of ten people whom take CBD oil, most likely there wouldn't be two people who take the same dosage amount as another in the group.   Find out how to you find your "sweet spot". 

First, it is important to understand the amount of mg's that are in the product you are taking.  There are several products out there, such as oil, tinctures, capsules, edibles, vape, etc. Each product may have a different concentrate amount such as 250mg, 500mg, 750mg, etc.  In this article I am going to refer to taking CBD oil drops that you take sublingual, under the tongue. CBD oil drops under the tongue is one of the most effective ways to take CBD oil and to absorb the most oil into your system. It goes directly into your bloodstream and bypassing your digestive system. If the product you are taking says a number like 500mg this means the total amount of oil that is in the bottle.  The bottle is 1 oz, there are 1000 drops per bottle.  Let’s do some math real quick! 500/1000 = .5, this is means that each drop is .5mg.  

Now that we have established how much CBD oil is in each drop we can now begin to take our CBD oil.  But wait how many do I take?!  Since we don't have the answer to that question, you should start out low and slow and take the drops twice per day. What is low and slow? See image below. 

Be sure to watch in a mirror the number of drops you are putting under your tongue.  Hold the liquid/drops under your tongue for at least 45 seconds.  Do this twice a day, morning and evening and if you need to add an extra dose in the middle of the day that is fine too.  CBD oil can last anywhere from five to eight hours. Another thing to note is that you don't have to increase up to twenty drops unless you need to.  The above image is just a guide to use. Also, consistency is key with CBD oil as it ensures that your Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is functioning at its best.  CBD oil should be taken more as a supplement or a vitamin rather than on an as needed basis. It can take one day or even several weeks for some to notice and experience the benefits of CBD oil. 

Tips to finding your sweet spot! It is important to track your progress because CBD oil is very subtle.  People have said several times, "it's like the pain was just gone" or "I was just no longer anxious or worried anymore."  Track your progress by making a list of how you are feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically.  Are you stressed? Anxious? Why? Where is your pain? How much pain? Once you take a self-inventory be sure to keep this somewhere so that you can revisit it frequently. The reason we track our progress is because this helps us to find our sweet spot.  As noted in the image above, start out low and slow and gradually increase week to week.

Let’s say I am taking CBD oil because I have anxiety and pain.  I make a list of how I am feeling, mentally, emotionally and physically.  The first week I start out taking two drops in the morning and two drops at night.  I do this for a week, I revisit my list and I am not really noticing much other than I know I am sleeping better, I have more energy, but I am still feeling a little anxiety and pain.  Now having taken CBD oil for the first week, I know that I didn’t experience any side effects and it has helped a little, I am going to increase it by two more drops.  Week 2, I am now taking four drops in the morning and four drops at night.  I am now feeling great mentally and emotionally, no anxiety, but I am still feeling pain.  Week 3, I am going to increase it by two more drops morning and night.  Ahhh, this week I am feeling no pain or anxiety! Now you have found your sweet spot!!!

Lets say you start out taking five drops in the morning and five drops in the evening your first week and you have a headache.  This means that you should lower your dosage amount.  This doesn’t mean to stop taking it.  All it means is that it is pushing the toxins out of your body. 

Some may experience side effects such as:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Anxiousness
  • Dry Mouth

If you begin to feel one of these side effects, it means that you are taking too much CBD oil.  It doesn’t mean to stop taking it, it just means to take less. Reduce your amount of CBD that you are taking by half. 

It is important to establish your routine with taking CBD oil.  One tip is to take it after you brush your teeth in the morning and evening. You can set an alarm or take it after you eat breakfast and dinner.  You don't have to take it with food, but the important thing is to take it consistently, everyday! In conclusion, CBD should be used as a daily supplement to ensure that one of the most important systems in our body, the Endocannabinoid System.
